The mine began in a leaf it then travelled 20cm up the stem before moving to a second leaf and pupating two thirds the way along the leaf edge.
The dark head and ventral plates are diagnostic features of E. atricollis larvae, the ventral plates being far more obvious in the early/intermediate instars. The image illustrates the same larva and mine photographed a week apart, the image from 23rd Sept. showing the fully mature larva exiting the mine.

Reared from fold on leaf edge of Prunus spinosa (blackthorn). Collected 7th July 2019, adult emerged 24th July 2019.

The native food plants for this species are Wayfaring-tree (Viburnum lantana) and Guelder Rose (Viburnum opulus) but cultivated Viburnum species may also be used, particularly the evergreen, winter-flowering Viburnum tinus which is commonly found in gardens and as municipal planting.

After initially mining a needle, feeding internally, the larva vacates the mine, spinning up next to a bud, boring into it to feed.
